Course description
Relevant legal topics include: criteria and perceptions of legal communications in diverse cultures; the use of jargon versus “plain English”; style recommendations as found in various journal articles e.g. http://network.bepress.com/law/legal-writing-and-research/. In addition, samples of great legal speeches as well as persuasive speeches from politics will highlight different rhetorical traditions and devices for practice in student productions in legal contexts they study. Roleplay will apply and develop practical experiences and skills.
Maturaniveau English
Successful candidates will
• know and understand essential theoretical principles of communication, classical rhetoric and current research in social-interactive discourse and behaviour;
• have analysed their own preferred communication styles and best practice samples of speeches; they can identify and judge effective and efficient manifestations of persuasive professional behaviour and discourse in different cultures and adjust their speaking and writing styles according to audiences and discourse communities they encounter in a wide range of professional situations;
• have practised professional communications and persuasive speeches in class assignments and prepared roleplay, as well as peer feedback and reflection for further self-directed and guided personal development;
• have demonstrated critical awareness of interpersonal and cross-cultural, cross-gender professional behaviours and communications with legal and client partners, as well as the general public.
